Tri Chat: IronMan Training Week 4

I’m late writing this post because we headed out on vacation and I am writing this from the apartment in Madrid we are calling home for a week or so.  Much of my one allotted suitcase is filled with workout clothes, and I am bringing my bike for our grand European expedition. I don’t want to talk about my past week of training because I am in such a time crunch to write and we are having so many experiences to talk about.  But alas like training, blogging takes discipline so here we go.

It was a pretty solid week especially since I knew I would be leaving on Saturday and would have an off week on Week 5.  That Saturday I had a 13 mile run on the schedule.  The thought of running in the morning and flying to Spain that same night was completely foreign to me; the old me would’ve considered it a legitimate day off.  This is where having a teammate and IronMan training buddy comes in handy.

Samurai Cynthia had the same workout and the same lack of desire as I did so we made sure to set a time and place to meet.  I wear the IronMan Florida visor she gave me on days I need a bit of inspiration.  She does too.  That Saturday, we both showed up wearing it!

Of the three disciplines, running is the one I struggle with the most and when I run by myself on these long stretches I tend to get lost in thought or I find myself walking when I really don’t have to.  So having Cynthia, who has a similar pace as I do, made this run a pretty pleasant and efficient one.  It doesn’t always happen but we were on the same page in terms of route, stops for water, and pacing.  We didn’t solve all of the worlds’ problems but we talked about many.  Our lives outside training are vastly different and yet we have so much in common so it’s fun to experience life through her eyes, and listen to her stories and share mine.  And though I can’t say “before I knew it our run was over” because I was counting down miles, I can say the run went by much faster than it usually does.

Here is the recap of this week:

Monday: SWIM (OWS) with another teammate Mickey. 1.5 miles on a slightly choppy ocean

Tuesday: BIKE Killer computrainer session with Andreas at the Ultrabikex Studio.  We did the Olympic distance course of the Wildflower triathlon.  This would be the last time I rode my bike until we get to Portugal next week.

Wednesday: RUN Tempo.  It was only twenty minutes in tempo pace so it was fun.  I can handle that … it’s when I am supposed to keep up the pace for longer than 30 minutes that I start getting into trouble.

Thursday: SWIM. Uninspired but did about 45 mins worth of pulling.

Friday: Life happened as I got ready to travel.  Short easy run that I am not sure can be considered as training!

Saturday: RUN. 13.3 miles of a steady pace

Sunday: REST.  We arrived and got settled.  Between the flight, the tired kids, and the jet lag a training session didn’t even cross my mind.

Just when Cynthia and I were finding our running groove, I left and will be gone for five weeks.  It will be hard to not have her around, and I’ll miss her and the rest of the Wolfpack who have been so supportive.  I won’t be running by the sailboats below for a while, but I look out the window, see Madrid, and can’t help but be excited.

How was your training week?
