I don’t normally do this, but I am submitting an application to Best Western to be their Latino Summer Travel Blogger, and well, I thought the best way to do that was to show them what we would do if we were selected to #ViajaConBW.

Dreamer (now 9) was on his first airplane ride at three months, and from then on … whenever we have the opportunity to go somewhere we do. Most of the time, we travel to see Joe’s parents and sisters in the Northeast. The boys love it when it’s the winter.

We also travel on family trips with my family and most recently we spent five weeks in Spain and Portugal in an unforgettable journey … with way too many pictures to share.

And other times, we do a “racecation.” That is, I sign up for a race and we all go. Once the race is done, we spend some time traveling around. We did that most recently in Arizona where I competed in an Ironman last November.

This summer we are all heading to another racecation in Lake Placid, New York where I will be competing in another Ironman at the end of July. But the summer is long, and we have plenty of time to add in another adventure.

Given this is a contest for Latino summer blogger, I figured we could use the opportunity to go back to our roots. I am 100% Cuban (though I was born and raised in Brazil and have never set foot on the island). Joe is 100% from South Texas (though he has never actually lived there). So the boys call themselves Cubexicans.

Living in Miami, they get a daily dose of Cuban heritage and culture as we are surrounded by it. However, the only one that has been to Texas is Joe. The boys and I have never been, and we don’t know most of his family who lives in the Rio Grande Valley.

My boys have been begging us to go. They think Texas and they think Cowboys. Their grandparents have given them all the right accessories from cowboy hats and shirts to even a bolo.

We can’t go to Cuba (at least not yet), so wouldn’t it be nice to introduce our boys to our Texan/Mexican/American culture? If selected, we would head to San Antonio and from there make our way down to Corpus Cristi and beyond. We would be meeting family, learning about their heritage, and having one more adventure to add to our books.
